Winemaker, avid bowler and US Army veteran, George Chelf has not only perfected the Newport Vineyards winemaking craft, he created it. Time in the Army stationed in Germany near several vineyards sparked Chelf’s interest in winemaking. Upon his return to the states he acquired the position of assistant winemaker under Captain Alexander, who planted the first vines. In 1988 Chelf became head winemaker. Over the past 30 years his dedication and passion to the craft has brought over 50 medals to the Newport Vineyards wine portfolio.

Brewer, fishing enthusiast and skilled surfer, Kevin Beachem has nurtured Taproot Brewing Company since the very beginning. Born and raised in New Jersey, Kevin gained an interest in brewing after a semester abroad in London, England. Tasting the bitters and ales that make the region famous, Kevin became inspired to detour from his business school background, and create something delicious.
After years learning the brewing process in his hometown of Wall, NJ, a change of pace sent Kevin north to Rhode Island, where he met John Nunes, who was in need of a skilled leader to help him bring his brewery dreams to life.
From the brewery’s origin in 2018, Kevin has crafted over 100 unique brews under the Taproot name, and mastered over 50 styles of brewing. He has gained a local reputation for his unique take on farm fresh brewing, and for his noticeably friendly demeanor. He’s likely to be the first face you see when you arrive, and is always up for a chat.
